About the Conference

For twenty three years, the Socialist Scholars Conference—the largest annual event of the U.S. Left—has brought together thousands of radical, socialist, and feminist activists and scholars for a weekend of spirited debate, dialogue, and solidarity. It has become the Left’s most important and stimulating event, an indispensable venue for activists seeking to explore their differences as well as share common ground.

This year’s Conference focuses on the accelerating erosion of the public sphere—that is, the theft of the goods and power that should be ours—as privatization continues to sweep the globe. Health care, education, and social security are being disappeared. From post-war reconstruction to the U.S. electoral process and from the water supply to our global environment and genetic heritage—everything is increasingly up for sale.

But there are alternatives. Local democratic initiatives, such as Brazil’s participatory budgets, are on the rise in several countries. In the areas of media consolidation, information privatization, and proprietary technology, there is increasingly effective resistance. We’ll discuss new modes of organizing via the internet, as well as the need to improve and expand alternative media and develop new strategies for protecting the public interest in the overall media sector.

Meanwhile, there are important issues to debate. The domestic fallout from the war in Iraq has been record deficits and a jobless “recovery.” Disillusionment with Bush’s foreign policies and the deterioration of domestic economic conditions are combining to open space for progressive politics. How should the Left respond? What is the larger context for the Administration’s reckless venture in Iraq? Are we seeing a new form of imperialism? Will there be new interventions?

As always, the Conference will raise the questions and challenge you to find the answers, energized by the contributions of some of the world’s leading thinkers. They say: “There is No Alternative.” We say: Come to the 2004 Socialist Scholars Conference and we’ll show you … many! See you there!
